Guns of the Old West - Spring 2021

This is our most legendary issue yet! We’ve dedicated this one to all the heroes, guns, and legends that helped shape the larger than life characters of the Old West. While some of the stories may have been born from figments of imagination, others were created out of necessity like Colt’s loophole to sell its Civil War era percussion revolvers as cartridge loading guns while Smith & Wesson still controlled the rights to build them. In this issue we discuss some folklore as well as the tales that remain factual to this day.

Contributor Phil Spangenberger delivers a big story about small guns, the fabled Henry Deringer and “Derringer-style” pistols favored by those who chose to be discrete but deadly, Frank Jardim explores the history of small bore side-by-side shotguns, the .410 gauge “collectors” guns once sold in England and Europe for “collecting” small game, and author Bill Bell takes the latest Taylor’s & Co. S&W New Model No. 3 Frontier model to the range to prove that old gun designs are timeless.
